Izzie Derry releases candid rock single ‘When Will It End’

Alt singer-songwriter Izzie Derry has released a captivating new single, ‘When Will It End,’ a punchy rock track that addresses the feeling of exhaustion in life’s daily grind, a topic that is all too relatable.

The Brighton-based musician is having quite a year and isn’t stopping, between releasing new music and embarking on her summer tour. After listening to the song, I ponder- is this Izzie Derry’s most experimental body of work to date?

The track, which was written and produced by Derry herself, unpacks the feeling of burnout masterfully through emotive lyrics and bright vocals. In particular, the lyrics “I’ll smile just like I rehearsed, I’ll smile and watch it get worse” convey the human instinct to smile through pain, even in times of anxiety or distress, a message which resonates with listeners everywhere.

This song is for everyone who feels like they’re at the end of their tether. Sing
along or even scream! I hope it makes you feel better, because writing it did for
me."

In addition, the musician has also teased an accompanying music video, which is a witty yet incredibly real take on life’s monotony, as Derry wakes to perform a series of ritualistic daily tasks.

Another incredibly honest take from the music video teaser was a poster, seen in the back of the shot, which read “I’m not great at advice, may I interest you in a sarcastic comment?” This is one of many visual elements in the video that aid in setting the tone for the song, as the singer gets candid about her feelings.

The release symbolises a shift in Derry’s sonic journey, as the musician adopts a more punky-rock sound which gives the track a Hayley Williams edge, especially when accompanied by Derry’s vibrant vocals. ‘When Will It End’ sees Derry take a leap into the raw energy of rock, and follows the musician’s previous release ‘If They Knew What You Did’ an emotive and empowering track which also sets the tone for a new sonic direction. This sound transgresses the musician’s 2023 album ‘Til We Reach The Sun’ that boasts a bold, jazzy piano and wistful folk elements, indicating Derry’s growth and versatility as an artist.

One of the most surprising aspects of the single is definitely the outro, as we hear Derry let out a cathartic scream. Truly at the end of her tether, Derry sings “late night, early morning” repetitively, creating a chaotic yet liberating closure to the brilliant release. The nature of the lyrics, which deal with the feeling of being trapped in life’s repetitive cycle, pairs well with the anxiety created by the overlapping vocals and bold guitar rhythms. This experimental sound makes for a masterful and satisfyingly poetic delivery of the musician’s message, which still remains painstakingly raw and relatable, in true Izzie Derry fashion.

In short, Izzie Derry’s ‘When Will it End’ is charming, relatable and possesses a jagged edge which cannot be overlooked. The track is out now on all major streaming platforms.
